Home healthcare is more commonly referred to as personal care or health care given by a skilled caregiver in the person’s home rather than primary health care given in a group facility such as nursing homes or clinics. Home healthcare is also sometimes referred to as domiciliary care or residential care. The type of services included may vary from those provided at a hospital to those offered at home.Learn more about us at Home Health Care Philadelphia
Home healthcare services can be provided through a variety of different sources. Most often, the elderly receive these services through their doctors or other medical professionals. Many times, however, when a person is elderly or has an illness that requires specialized medical attention, a nurse, a physical therapist, or a licensed therapist will be required to assist the person or persons providing home health care. These healthcare professionals may be called upon to provide diagnosis, consultation, prescriptions, assistance with activities of daily living (ADL), and the management of physical or emotional symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or depression. If a licensed therapist is not available, home healthcare services may be provided through other types of services, such as custodial or personal care under the supervision of a licensed nurse, or a licensed vocational therapist.
Home healthcare services are most commonly required when a person has a temporary illness or condition and cannot remain in the hospital for a period of time due to other factors, such as a severe or critical illness or life event. Examples of situations in which home health care is most often required to include a patient who has had surgery and needs to be nursed back to health following the procedure, a patient who has had a stroke and cannot move properly due to brain damage, or a patient waiting for surgery to recover from a surgical procedure. Nursing home abuse has been identified as the cause of death for many patients who are in need of additional and long-term medical care. Long-term hospital stays have been known to cause serious and fatal injuries. For this reason, it is imperative that any patient who may be in need of home health care make every attempt to contact a suitable and competent health care professional as soon as possible, by providing as much accurate information as possible. The health and safety of your family is the most important issue here.
