I deeply agree that true music teachers are not automatically born into an educational environment or an history of great success. Two career tracts-performance or preparation-are given to music students in the education system. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, “Those who can’t … instruct.” Well, it’s not just good teachers who genuinely do well. Just because a person discovers his way down a journey to musical talent doesn’t imply they ‘re competent, or even inclined to teach anyone how to get there. The fact is neither of these two career tracts ensures a true music teacher’s production.
A person who is a true music teacher is someone who has the ability to explain the subject matter in a vast array of “Differentiated Instruction” styles and ways. For example, it is a known fact that people learn in different ways. Not everybody learns from the same thought train or stimuli. Some people learn or simply put in from auditory stimulus … By hearsay. Others learn best from seeing or watching, and others through kinesthetics or through doing. A true teacher must be able to distinguish the learning style of the pupil and provide the proper teaching response for the student. Furthermore, within each of these three learning styles, a teacher must be able to describe the subject matter in terms that the pupil may connect. A born teacher’s personality traits are a genuine desire to teach for the student’s improvement, the advancement of the craft, the ability to communicate the subject matter effectively, vast problem-solving skills, creativity, adaptability, and proficient knowledge.
The second item in the experience of music lessons is the listener. Several occasions I think I could have the ability to somehow turn a pupil into a professional artist by placing them through the work and pushing them to excel. Sadly, a pupil never progresses without doing the requisite repetitions to be able to play an instrument.
